Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month and European Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Day
June is Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Awareness Month – a time dedicated to raising awareness of this rare but serious disease that affects muscle strength and the daily functioning of those living with it. On June 2nd, we specifically mark European Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Day with the aim of informing the public, supporting patients, and encouraging early recognition of symptoms.

Myasthenia gravis is the most common disorder of the neuromuscular junction, caused by an autoimmune attack on acetylcholine receptors, resulting in muscle weakness. The most common symptoms include ptosis (drooping eyelids), double vision, and fatigue-related weakness that typically worsens throughout the day. Initially, muscles of the head and neck are affected, followed later by limb muscles.
In milder cases, work ability remains intact, while more severe forms of the disease can lead to disability.
The condition is more frequent in young women and older men, but it can occur at any age. Diagnosis is confirmed using the edrophonium test.
Treatment of myasthenia gravis requires an individualized approach, with the goal of achieving full symptom remission. This is possible in milder cases, while more severe cases may require longer recovery times and a combination of medications. Common treatments include acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, and plasmapheresis. In more serious cases, cytostatic drugs and thymectomy may be indicated.
Therapy is adjusted based on symptoms, presence of antibodies, and CT scan results. Some medications may cause side effects, requiring careful dosing and regular monitoring. Patients must take medications as prescribed, avoid physical strain and certain substances, and adapt their diet accordingly. Although the disease has a variable course, with timely treatment and proper care, most patients can achieve good symptom control and maintain a high quality of life.

On the occasion of European Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Day, observed on June 2, the Croatian Association of Muscular Dystrophy Societies (SDDH) is launching the campaign “MG as a Challenge”. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and educate the public and key stakeholders about the symptoms and importance of early diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, as well as to improve health literacy regarding the disease and its impact on quality of life.
As part of the campaign, a symbolic walk of people living with myasthenia gravis will be held in Zagreb on June 2, starting at 10:30 AM from Ban Josip Jelačić Square to European Square. The event will include participation from representatives of health institutions, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The aim of the walk is to highlight the daily challenges faced by those living with myasthenia gravis and to send a message of support and solidarity.
Additionally, as a visible sign of support, landmarks and monuments in several Croatian cities will be illuminated in green—the symbolic color of myasthenia gravis—on the evening of June 2.
